What is memory foam?

Memory Foam is made from polyurethane with additional components that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing the density of the foam and the shape conformability of the foam. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. High-density memory foam (we use only high-density) will react with body heat and allow it to mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. Memory Foam was originally developed for use in the NASA space program to ease the pressure of extreme G-forces.

Memory foam was subsequently used in medical applications, for example when a patient suffered from pressure sores or had to be bed-bound for a long period. It was initially too expensive for general use. In recent years, memory foam has become cheaper to produce and is now widely available for the home. Its heat-retaining properties are also helpful to some pain sufferers, who find the added warmth also helps alleviate pain.

A memory foam mattress is usually denser than an ordinary foam mattress. This makes it more supportive – but also heavier. It is often seen as a good compromise between the comfort of a soft mattress and the supportiveness of a firm one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Memory Foam

What is Density and why is it important?
Density is the weight of the foam if cut into a 12” cube. Higher density foams will be more resilient and durable than lower density foams. Though foams with different densities may feel similar, a higher density memory foam (like MyComfort’s 5.3-lb density memory foam) will last much longer and retain it’s ability to come back to full shape longer.

Will Memory Foam feel firmer if the overall temperature of a room is low?
Yes, memory foam is a temperature sensitive material. Memory foam is designed to get softer as your body heat raises the temperature of the foam. However if the memory foam is used in a room that is colder than 60 degrees it will feel a lot firmer, but will soften upon the body heating the foam during sleep.

Does Memory Foam sleep hot?
Yes, for some people, but not for everybody. Depending on the breathability of your bedding, the temperature of your room, and the heat coming from your body, memory foam may sleep slightly hot. Most people don’t experience this. If you use a MyComfort Comfort Overlay, this will not be a factor since your body heat will not overly affect the underlying mattress. You will still get the overall conforming properties of memory foam adding to the amazing properties of the Comfort Overlay that you choose.

Is it hard to move in a Memory Foam bed?
Because Memory Foam is a slow-rebounding surface, some people feel like it’s hard to move or turn over in Memory Foam. Most people get used to this sensation and it doesn’t bother them after some time.

Will Memory Foam develop body impressions?
Every foam bed will develop some body impressions. At MyComfort, we guarantee our memory foam against big body impressions for twenty years. Slight body impressions do not effect the performance of the memory foam or the durability of your bed.

How do you offer such high quality Memory Foam products at such a reasonable price?
There are two reasons. First, we cut out the middle-men. We buy straight from the manufacturer and pass on those savings to you. Second, we don’t double the price of our memory foam in order to advertise it heavily. This helps us bring the price of high quality Memory Foam down to a level that most people can afford.

There are many reasons. Memory Foam is much better than a traditional mattress, but by itself, it still has flaws when it comes to therapy, heat retention, and resiliency.
