The first time that sleeping on air has actually made sense – a lot of sense!

Why You May Have Been Dissatified With Air Beds in the Past
Until the invention and perfection of Multi-Cell, air chambers in mattresses consisted of one single large air chamber. They look like they are made of individual chambers because they contain baffles (interior walls) to prevent them from ballooning – but, they are one chamber with a single top skin. That top skin is in a constant fight over conforming to your body vs. being pushed back by the air pressure. When your hips and shoulders try to sink in, they each try to pull that top skin in different directions, and since the skin can’t stretch, it doesn’t happen. The result is not good – if you pump it up enough that you are not in a ‘hammock’ shape, then you get major pressure on your hips and shoulders. If you let enough air out (reduce the pressure on that top skin) so that it starts to conform better to your body, then your whole spine is curved ( ‘hammocking’) and your hips sink too deeply in comparison with the rest of your torso. There is no good ‘in-between’, and so there is not a perfect sleep pressure to select.
Let’s look at some illustrations of this problem. In the name-brand traditional air technologies, when you pump up the mattress to a firm setting (Figure A) it puts high pressure on the hips and shoulders, but doesn’t support the spine. So, the spine has to sag until the torso reaches the mattress. Ouch in the hips and shoulders, ache in the back. So you try letting enough air out to make it softer-feeling (Figure B). This reduces the air pressure on the top skin of the air chamber, so your shoulders get less pressure. You would think this would also reduce the pressure on your hips, but because you are now in an overall-body-curve hammock shape, your hip (at the bottom of the curve) gets even more pressure, and of course your back is part of that hammock curve. Ouch again. The beautiful feature of air is that the actual air pressure is exactly equal everywhere in the chamber. Fortunately, Multi-Cell can take advantage of this equal pressure without having a single top skin ruin everything – Multi-Cell is an amazing solution to the problem of traditional air chambers. We’ll explain why below.
Multi-Cell air chambers – the Miracle of Equal Pressure:
The top skin of Multi-Cell’s air chamber is configured to act as numerous separate air chambers all connected together so that (1) the interior air pressure is equal everywhere, and (2) any part of the top surface can be pushed down independent of the other parts (Figure C). In fact, when your hips and shoulders sink softly into their respective cells, the overall air pressure increases and actually pushes up on your mid-section, aligning your spine (Figure D). So you get the best of both worlds – super softness and excellent spinal support and alignment. By choosing your ‘perfect’ pressure, you will be able to select the degree of back support you desire, without ever having high pressure points.
